Charming Nostalgia
In my final project, I'm going back to my roots: the family jewels that carry Jewish symbols. The symbols are the same ones my great grandfather, the gifted goldsmith, created or collected in Iran. The tradition that died with my grandmother says a male grandchild gets a coin and a female gets a hamsa on their wedding day to prevent the evil eye. Bottles from family gatherings were incorporated into my jewels. The glass was smashed, molded, and melted in a technique that binds the parts back together, similarly to the connections inside the family. With the new transformation of the material, similies are rising and corresponding with the good old hamsa motifs, creating a personal and pensive language of charms and nostalgia that connects me back to the familial heritage and welcomes me back into the family. Materials | glass bottles, copper, steel, enamel end epoxy glue Working techniques | glass fusing, enamel, traditional goldsmithing work.
