      Natural History

Natural History is a 37-volume encyclopaedia written and edited by Pliny the Elder, a military commander and a naturalist who lived and worked in Rome during the 1st century. Pliny aspired to explore our world to its edges and recorded the information he gathered in a series of books that would later become known as the first and oldest scientific encyclopaedia to appear in the Western world. In this illustrated version, I picked out the most bizarre, absurd, and fantastic essays from Pliny's writings in order to examine the tension between Human knowledge and the time in which it was found. Is scientific truth absolute, or dependent of time and place? Might it be dependent of its researcher's own point of view? Which conceptions or misconceptions remained with the Western culture to this day? And is fear of the unfamiliar and the unknown is so deeply rooted in our cultural history?
