      Studies in Gravity

The concept of "relationships" guided me throughout the creation of this project, relationships between objects that influence and are influenced by others. Porcelain that is fired at high temperatures often causes it to collapse and change the shape of the ceramic body. From my first encounter with this phenomenon, I was inspired to investigate such "accidents" and so I began to create objects that I purposefully collapsed and distorted in the kiln. In developing my process, I learned to manipulate the object according to my desires, while also giving the fire a and the heat the "opportunity" to perform its unique and organic transformation, one that never duplicates itself in exactly in the same way. The process itself created a relationship between me and the fire, wild and unexpected, in which it is not always clear who is in control and who is being controlled.
